We get a lot of questions on our roles as wedding planners. “Your job is so stressful!”, “How do you do this?” “How does it feel?” -Now, instead of giving you a long and somewhat boring usual answer, we wanted to let you in on The Felling. In this one, you get to follow our day like a story – through feelings, let us know if you feel it by the end.

The quiet before the storm—a moment we cherish, with final sips of our morning coffee it is time to prepare for the wedding day! Planners day begins with making sure all vendors know where they need to be, by what time and making sure they know what they are doing ( this is crucial), checking details such as latest weather reports, and give soft-spoken directives to other team members working on the day. Today is not just any day. Today, two people that have become our dear friends in planning will stand at the heart of Dubrovnik, and make a promise. And it is our job to ensure that everything around them—every flower, every light, every subtle note of music—reflects the grandeur of that promise.

The Canvas of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, with its labyrinthine streets and timeless beauty, is not just a city—it is a canvas. Each wedding here is a brushstroke on that canvas, blending history, romance, and elegance into a masterpiece that will be remembered forever.

Today’s wedding is set in Sponza Palace, suspended between tradition and modern life. Sponza, the beauty of our town, is home to so many ‘I do’s’, I bet she knows them all… The grandeur of this location is humbling, yet it demands a kind of restraint. Everything must be in harmony with this natural beauty, enhancing it without overwhelming it.

The challenge is always the same: to create a world within a world, a moment that feels eternal in a place that already defies time.

The Art of Preparation

Weeks, months—even years—of preparation have led to this day. The countless discussions with the couple, the meticulous planning of every detail, from the softness of the linen table tops to the precise shade of white for the roses. Each decision has been carefully woven into the fabric of the event, creating a tapestry that will unfold over the course of a single day.

But no amount of preparation can prepare for the unpredictable. As wedding planners, we are artists, but we are also troubleshooters, always anticipating the unexpected. The wind shifts, and I think of the floral arrangements. Will they hold in the breeze, or will petals be carried away. In those moments we really on our trusted vendors who are experts at their fields, so we consult with the florists, making sure the delicate arrangements will stand strong against the elements, as if they, too, are part of Dubrovnik’s enduring landscape.

The tables must be set just so, the seating perfectly aligned, menus set exactly and seating plan vetted by the attending guests. There must also be a sense of flow—something intangible that makes a luxury wedding more than just a series of details. It’s about creating a feeling, a space where everything falls away except for the magic of the moment.

The Arrival of the Couple

The bride and groom arrive, glowing with the kind of joy that can only be found on this day. We meet them in their hotel suite, a sanctuary of calm before the day truly begins. The bride’s dress—soft, delicate lace draped over flowing silk—captures the essence of the wedding itself: timeless, elegant, and steeped in beauty. There is a quiet reverence in these moments, as if the world holds its breath before releasing it in a rush of celebration.

We guide them through the final touches, but our role here is gentle, unobtrusive. The day belongs to them, and our task is to ensure that it unfolds seamlessly, like a perfectly orchestrated bouquet we just put on the table.

The Ceremony—Where Love Meets Sky

The air is thick with anticipation as guests begin to gather in the Palace. From where we stand, we can see the guests take in their surroundings, their eyes sweeping over the walls, the distant hum of the city outside. They are captivated. Dubrovnik, in its quiet grandeur, speaks for itself, and yet the ceremony has been designed to echo that beauty—to enhance it in ways both subtle and grand.

The bride appears, a vision against the backdrop of the palace. Time seems to slow as she makes her way down the aisle, her every step a silent promise. The music swells, delicate and soft, carrying the moment forward.

It is in these moments that we step back in the background, making sure that nothing disrupts the moment. Our work is invisible now—an unseen hand guiding the flow of events. The beauty of a luxury wedding is that it feels effortless, as though it simply emerged from the earth fully formed. We need to make sure that the drinks get out at the perfect time once the ceremony ends and that the guest follow the couple down the aisle and have the fresh drinks.

The Evening Unfolds

As the ceremony gives way to the evening’s celebrations, the tone shifts from reverence to joy. The reception is set in at Lovrijenac fort overlooking the sea and the whole town of Dubrovnik, where candlelight flickers against the gathering dusk. The tables are set with precision—glimmering glasses, fine china, floral arrangements that speak of romance and refinement. The guests sit down to a feast of Croatian delicacies, each dish as thoughtfully curated as the wedding itself.

Above them, a canopy of stars begins to emerge, mirroring the soft glow of the lanterns that hang above them. The evening is filled with laughter, heartfelt toasts, and moments of intimacy that belong only to this night, this place. As the couple takes their first dance beneath the stars on Lovrijenac, it feels as though the whole world has paused to witness it. And Lovrijenac, with its centuries-old history, cradles these moments as if it has always been waiting for them.

The Final Hours—A Celebration of Love

The night deepens, and with it comes a sense of fulfillment. The rain—a surprise—lights up the sky, reflecting off the night like bursts of joy. The guests cheer, glasses are raised, and in that moment, everything comes together: the months of planning, the careful execution topped by a simple act of rain. You may think that we were stresses for this moment, but we came prepared any the rain was a friend we expected, and that is probably why our couple had such a nice time.

There is something sacred about the end of a wedding. The guests linger, reluctant to leave this beautiful fort we’ve created for them. And yet, like all great works of art, it must eventually come to an end for them to be able to look back and say “wow”.

As the last guest departs and the candles flicker out, I take a moment to walk through the now-quiet venue. There is a stillness that wasn’t there before, a sense of completion. In the distance, the city of Dubrovnik sleeps once more, its streets silent under the watchful stars.

Tomorrow, the city will wake to a new day, but for now, it holds the memories of a wedding that was more than just a celebration—it was an experience, a story told through the language of love, beauty, and timelessness.

This is what it means to be a wedding planner in Dubrovnik. To take a dream and make it real, to create something that will live on in the hearts of those who experienced it, forever tied to the city that made it possible.

2024 has been nothing short of magical, filled with love, laughter, and the kind of memories that linger long after the music fades and the guests depart. At Dubrovnik Event, we are humbled and deeply grateful for the journey this season has taken us on, hand-in-hand with the most beautiful couples, talented vendors, and unforgettable moments.

It is your artistry, dedication, and unrelenting passion that turns visions into reality. Whether it was the delicate touch of a floral arrangement that brought tears to a bride’s eyes, the music that set the tone for the ceremony, DJ opening the dance floor with ‘Dancing Queen’ (I know you are singing it now as well…) or the culinary creations that left guests in awe of Dubrovnik finest meals, each of you contributed in ways that words can hardly describe.

We understand why someone would choose to come alone and enjoy this breathtaking city and have the best memory ever – eternal love. To help showcase the beauty of this trend we have decided to share one of our lovely clients’ experiences with you.

What Initially Drew You to the Idea of a Micro Wedding?

We were initially drawn to a micro wedding due to the financial gain of not spending $50-100K in the US to have a wedding and the positive of being able to immediately go on our honeymoon and create such a combined, special experience for just the two of us! I loved the idea of the micro wedding because we took most of a year to tell everyone what we were doing, get them used to or excited for the idea and were still made to feel like a bride and groom the entire experience! I feel like an elopement typically has a hidden component to it. There were components that I felt were necessary for me to feel like we had a wedding which you all were able to assist me with coordinating and creating. Including florals, live music, hair and makeup, photography and videography etc.

Devin, there is an idea of what a wedding is and ‘needs’ to be in our society, it differs in cultures and religions and sometimes even in family opinions. What is a ‘wedding’ to you and what are some of the biggest decisions that you made to make it YOUR wedding.

A ‘wedding’ to me is the opportunity to create beautiful moments, isolating that you have chosen to spend your life with someone and being able to capture that special time. I think the concept of choosing to spend your life with someone is often forgotten with a wedding and the wedding becomes more about what a family wants and needs for the day rather than what you as a couple want. We strongly refused to allow that to happen for our wedding. Some of the big decisions we made were the dress, the veil and the tuxedo. Customizing our own wedding bands and choosing a location that encapsulated European architecture, the beach without sand and gorgeous photo opportunities.

I loved your wedding dress and your overall style on your wedding day! It really showed how much time you invested in the wedding to be a special moment for you without having to sacrifice anything or any part of you. Was this really important to you? To find the right dress, shoes and makeup stylist to help bring this idea to life on the wedding day?

Thank you!! Yes, the dress was pivotal to me for our wedding. I think every girl dreams of their wedding dress and just feeling gorgeous on that day so I was sure to make sure I loved it. I bought the dress in November 2023, it arrived in July 2024 from Australia and was handmade. Had it altered and carried it by hand to Dubrovnik from Texas. The drama of the dress was perfect for the stunning setting of Dubrovnik, in my opinion. Shoes wise I went for comfort because of the cobblestone and lots of walking. Makeup styling, I really wanted to lean into warm colors as that’s what matches my skin tone best. I brought some Pinterest inspiration to the team in Dubrovnik (Salon Up – Barbara) and she absolutely crushed it.

How did you and John choose Dubrovnik as your wedding destination? How did it differ from what you would have picked for a larger wedding?

We chose Dubrovnik due to the stunning architecture, the access to seafood and the beach with no sand but crystal clear water. The combination we knew would make for stunning photos and videos. Dubrovnik is so beautiful and really Google/online photos don’t even do it justice. It is just a place you have to see in real life and is so magical for a wedding. Since it was just us two, it was so much easier to plan the travel and coming so far from Texas. If we had done a bigger wedding, we would’ve done a destination wedding with a closer destination to Texas to ensure parents and friends could spend less $ on travel and it would be more convenient travel (less time). A prime example of a wedding being about guests/others and not the couple :).

With a smaller wedding, you can potentially save in some areas and splurge in others. How did you and John decide where and how to allocate your budget?

We 100% saved with the decision we made to have the micro wedding and honeymoon combined. I know for a fact we spent 1/4th of what we would’ve originally spent to have a wedding and we got the trip of a lifetime out of it simultaneously. It was a no brainer for us! We chose areas that were important to us to splurge. Our outfits, our custom rings, florals and photography/videography were most important to us and we spent the most money on those things. My dress cost more than both of our round trip flights to Dubrovnik. In total for the wedding and the 12 day trip of a lifetime with stays, excursions, eating, in-home care for our dogs, literally every single expense- we spent $20K and are very happy with that.

Now, having done your beautiful ceremony at the Viewpoint with just the two of you, would you change anything about it? Tell us about the moment that was ‘perfect’ in the ceremony for you.

I honestly wouldn’t change anything about the day, except something that is unchangeable, which was the weather the day before our ceremony. The intimacy of our ceremony left us time to focus on just us, which was really special and so rare with a wedding typically. We had zero distractions, frustrations, quarrels, drama- just a wonderful day. My perfect moment was when my chosen song started playing via violin and cello, I saw our beautiful venue and my perfect floral arrangement waiting for me and I was walking down the aisle. I immediately started sobbing!

We had record rain on Monday for Dubrovnik in September and our ceremony was Tuesday. We couldn’t get to Old Town on Tuesday due to the flooding and extreme traffic issues so we had to do the photo shoot Wednesday morning. Ora’s on the spot pivot in plan and getting everyone on board was the reason it was so successful and turned out just fine! I would recommend dealing with more heat and doing April-August for the wedding, if I were to do it again!

 

From Dubrovnik With Love

Since you had a longer vacation in Dubrovnik, let us know what was your favorite part? We spoke about having a ‘local’ experience, and I shared my Dubrovnik with you, now share yours with us!

My favorite parts were the setting, the Dubrovnik Event Team and your vendors and the excursions we chose to go on and experience. We really had such a wonderful time all around, it’s hard to give one favorite. The setting component- seeing Old Town was, of course, really cool but we also really loved the Konavle area. We got to go horseback riding there with Kojal and the team. Our vendors- Ora, you were a highlight of the trip and created the memories of a lifetime for us. Truly forever grateful. We also loved Fabijan and Ivana- our husband and wife photography and videography team. They were effortlessly our friends from the moment we met them. They were able to coach us properly to get such natural but beautiful photos. We’ve seen 11 in a sneak peak and are already so happy with them. All our friends and family are saying they are magazine worthy! Excursions outside of horseback riding, we zip lined over Old Town with Panoramic Zip line and loved it! We also went to Lokrum island which was really cool for the day. So much to do and see in Dubrovnik!

What Advice Would You Give to Other Couples?

Finally, Devin, what’s the one piece of advice you’d give to someone considering a micro wedding in Dubrovnik?

Trust the Dubrovnik Event Team and their vendors! Do not try and do a micro or macro wedding on your own, if you’re not natively Croatian. They were pivotal to the success and happiness we have around our wedding. Oh and carry your dress, ladies! If you are traveling, do not risk checking it and losing it!

What Was the Most Surprising Thing About Having a Micro Wedding?

For Devin: “Was there something about the day or the planning process that caught you completely off guard?”

How completely comfortable I was just going with the flow. I completely remember the day with pure joy. I was surprised at how not super stressed I was because I knew I had the perfect team to rely on for any issues! Our only issue was the weather and we had an immediate solution all thanks to Ora.
